About

Miles Abernethy Design

I began Miles Abernethy Design in 2006 after an extensive career in editorial design, collateral design and brand development. I saw the opportunity to bring my professional design and branding expertise to small and mid-sized businesses, design studios and advertising agencies.

That opportunity has been realized as I've partnered with design studios and agencies such as: The Arizona Republic, BDN Aerospace, The Lavidge Company, REM Custom Publications, Catapult Strategic Design, Propeller, ParaCore Web Development, TechTHiNQ, SHR Perceptual Management, and Chapter Two. And for such clients as: HealthNet, Behr Process Corporation, Suzuki, Del Webb, My Own Space, Renaissance Sciences Corp., First Credit Union, Quivira/Ritz-Carlton, Bella Fíne, BestFit Vending, BRR Architecture, Community, Marcus and Millichap, Western Nebraska Community College, Foresight Financial Group, ResultsPositive, Banner Health, Ulthera, InMaricopa.com, Forrester & Holway Arizona Multifamily Advisory Group, Chicago Clean Energy, Tech Mold, VIVO Partners, Thunderbird School of Global Management, Entegris | ATMI, Retronix Semiconductor and DMB Associates for their Eastmark, Marley Park and DC Ranch communities.

New York Editorial Design

I began my career in New York City as a designer and art director in the magazine, advertising, catalog and book-design industries for such clients as: The New York Times, Attenzione, Interiors, The British Tourist Authority, Bloomingdales, Paul Hardy Design, Clarkson Potter, Rizzoli, Pfizer Pharmaceutical, ABC and CBS.

Collateral Design and Art Direction

After eight years in New York, I joined SHR Design, a Scottsdale-based, collateral-design firm. I was hired principally to bring my editorial design skills and experience to the world of annual reports, magazines and brochure design for clients such as Audi, GMC Trucks, Celebrity Cruises, GTSI, Salt River Project and DMB Associates. Involvement with these accounts also dramatically broadened the art direction experience I had come with from New York City to include managing complex lifestyle, architectural and automotive photo shoots, as well as directing other design creatives.

Brand and Identity Development

After serving as lead designer and design director on multiple client accounts, SHR switched its main focus to brand development and sensory positioning, changing its name to SHR Perceptual Management. This new direction provided me with the opportunity to become fluent in brand platform development and the assessment of the visual signals that manage critical brand perceptions. I developed and focus-tested sample creative applications, created brand style guides, trained agencies and in-house design teams on correct brand executions at all points of consumer contact as well as acted as design director for national and international clients: Verizon, Alaska Airlines, Boeing, BMW, Dodge, Ford, Diet Coke, Realty Executives, PetSmart, Kohler, Telluride Ski Resort, Weiser Lock, Herman Miller, Fairmont Hotels and Xyron to name a few.
